William J Snodgrass

William J. “Bill” Snodgrass, age 84, of Jewett passed away Monday, July 20, 2015 in Harrison Community Hospital, Cadiz following a lengthy illness.

   Born February 19, 1931 in Elm Grove, WV he was raised by his late grandparents George Rymer Snodgrass and Orpha Dell Snodgrass on their family farm. At the age of seventeen he was seeking adventure and entered the Army. He served in the Infantry in Korea at the 38th parallel prior to the start of the Korean War in 1948. Then he was shipped to Hawaii where he finished high school. Always wanting to learn, he became a machine gunner and was regularly chosen as the Colonels Orderly. When war broke out in 1950 he returned to Korea and was a recipient of the Purple Heart after being wounded in the chest on Hill 268. After recuperating in Japan he returned to Korea and was discharged in 1952. Following his service to his country he started work at Wheeling Steel Coke Plant where he continued studying and received his CC License to work on the mill’s radios. Then he advanced to Mingo Electronic Shop, then Continuous Caster at Wheeling-Pitt in Mingo and finally he was sent to computer school at both GE and Westinghouse in Pittsburgh to learn how to run the computers that run the plant, he retired in 1987.

   Bill was a member of the Bowerton Baptist Church, United Steel Workers Union Local 1190 in Steubenville and Scio American Legion Post #482. He was a former ham radio operator whose handle was “Chicken Bill”. He and his wife, Donna, enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, the Grand Canyon and toured the entire  Rt. 1 from Florida to Canada.

   He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Donna Pfouts Snodgrass, December 5, 2014. Also preceding him were a son James Snodgrass, a daughter Nita Snodgrass and the mother of his children Louella Wetzel Snodgrass.

   Surviving are children John (Dori) Snodgrass of Tappan, Carolyn Falls of Jewett, and Rita (Paul) Staley and Joseph Snodgrass both of Cadiz; step children Charlie “Chuck” Woods, Diane (Richard) Little, Ronald (Doris) Leggett, David (Trisha) Leggett and Joey (Connie) Leggett; eleven grandchildren; fifteen step grandchildren; six great grandchildren; twelve step great grandchildren and three step great-great grandchildren

  Services will be held Friday at 11 am in Koch Funeral Home, Scio with Pastor Gene Keplinger officiating. Friends may call Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the funeral home.
