Fred D Maffitt, age 89, a resident of Gables Care Center, formerly of Jewett, passed away Thursday, January 25, 2024, in Valley Hospice at Trinity Medical Center West, Steubenville.
A lifelong resident of Harrison County, he was born February 12, 1934, near Hopedale, the son of the late Harvey Maffitt and Audrey Finnicum Maffitt. Fred graduated from Jewett High School in 1953 and honorably served in the US Army. He delivered home heating oil for Carson Petroleum for around 40 years.
Fred was a member of the Bethel Methodist Church near Jewett and the Cadiz American Legion Post 34 where he was a devoted member of their honor guard. He was also one of the last surviving charter members of the Jewett Sportsman's Club and enjoyed doing anything outdoors. More recently he enjoyed his mornings with the McDonalds coffee crew in Cadiz. But what he loved most was the time he spent with his family.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life Cora M. "Peggy" Case Maffitt on May 12, 2020, they were married on February 8, 1956. He was also preceded in death by a sister Janet Walker and a grandson-in-law Jared Wade.
They were blessed with two children Brenda (Mark) Wallace of Jewett and Dan (Renee) Maffitt of Cadiz. Brenda's family includes a son Dustin (Jessica) Wallace and his children Nathan, Leah and Hannah, and a daughter Amber (Dustin) Ossman and her sons Olin and Garrett Wade. Dan's family includes a son Cody (Courtney) Maffitt and his children Dominic and Paige, and a daughter Alison Birney and her daughters Baylee and Serena, and stepdaughters Paula Moreland and Brandy Tanner. Fred was also blessed with an exchange student who he welcomed into the family, Dragan (Laura) Lazic and his children Vesna, Stefan, Molly and Austin.
Services will be held Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at 1 pm in Koch Funeral Home, 101 W Main St, Scio, with Pastor Dean Blythe officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Jewett. Friends may call two hours prior to the service from 11 am to 1 pm at the funeral home.
