Obituary

Edward David “E.D.” Shumaker, Jr., January 18, 1928 – January 27, 2026, lived a long and generous life in Scio, Ohio defined by curiosity, service, and a quiet devotion to the people around him. He was the son of Edward David “Doc” Shumaker (1896–1973) and Emma Lillich Gibbs (1894–1979), and the younger brother of Abbie Shumaker Amos (1925–2012), with whom he shared a lifelong bond.

A proud graduate of Scio High School’s Class of 1945, E.D. registered for the draft on his eighteenth birthday and went on to serve his country during the Korean War. After returning home, he continued his education at The Ohio State University, earning a B.S. in Biological Sciences in 1958. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and carried his Buckeye pride with him throughout his life.

E.D. returned to his hometown to teach Chemistry, Physics, and Science at Scio High School, shaping generations of students with his steady guidance, sharp mind, and patient encouragement. He had a gift for making complex ideas feel approachable, and many former students remembered him as the teacher who first made them feel capable.

Beyond the classroom, E.D. was known throughout the community for his lifelong passion for photography. With a camera always close at hand, he documented local events, everyday moments, and the people who made Scio feel like home. His photographs—many of which found their way to Digital Shoebox and local libraries—became a visual history of the community he loved so deeply.

E.D. is survived by his niece, Abbie Amos and her children, Russell and Bradley Golowin of Upper Arlington, Ohio; his nephew R. Clark Amos (Carol) and their children Ashley Clennan and Preston Amos of Ladue, Missouri and his nephew Marsh Amos of Scio, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his nephew Edward S. Amos and is survived by Ed’s wife, Carol, and their children, Matt (Lauren) Amos of Cincinnati, Ohio and Elliott (Kari) Amos, of Columbus, Ohio, as well as many friends, neighbors, and former students who will forever remember his kindness, humor, and unwavering presence. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the students he inspired, and the thousands of moments he captured through his lens—each one a testament to a life quietly and beautifully lived.

In keeping with E.D.’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. Family and friends will gather for a celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Scio Branch Library, c/o Puskarich Public Library, 200 E. Market St, Cadiz, Ohio 43907, in E.D.’s memory. Koch Funeral Home, Scio has been entrusted with his arrangements.
