Obituary

Terry McAfee Thompson, age 88, of Jewett, passed away Saturday, August 24, 2024, at Sienna Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation in Wintersville, surrounded by his loving family.

Born February 12, 1936, in the family home on Rumley St. in Jewett, he was a son of the late James M. Thompson and Twyla D. McAfee Thompson. He graduated from Jewett High School in 1954 and went to drafting school in Fairmont, WV for a year before enlisting in the Army in 1955. When he was old enough to hold a hammer, he started working alongside his father at his construction business. He returned to Jewett after being discharged from the Army and continued working with his father until his father stepped away from the business. Then he started Terry Thompson Construction Co, a legacy that has been passed on to his son Tod. He, and his wife Carol, also built and started Valie Lanes in Jewett in 1961.

Terry was the last surviving original proprietor of The McCook Bowling Association, as well as an inductee into their Hall of Fame. He was also twice inducted into the Harrison County Sports Hall of Fame, once for his skill on the basketball court and again with his Jewett football teammates. He also was a basketball official in his younger days but later in his life he could always be seen at anything his grandchildren were involved in, cheering them on.

He was a member of the Scio American Legion Post 482, Harrison Masonic Lodge 219, Scottish Rite and Jewett Presbyterian Church.

Surviving is his wife Carol Myers Thompson whom he married July 31, 1955, children Tanis (Tim Manson) Thompson, Tod (Marcy) Thompson and Christa (Jerry Linn) Thompson all of Jewett; grandchildren Kaylee (Dalton) Conroy, Drew (Taylor) Horn, Tory Thompson and Tayla Thompson; great grandchildren Oaklyn Conroy and Loren Horn; a sister-in-law Barbara Thompson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister Phyllis Wiley and brother McKinney Thompson.
