Thomas A. "Tom" Carothers, Sr, age 82, passed away Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at his home near Scio, surrounded by his loving family.
Born August 17, 1942, in Steubenville he was a son of the late Dale I Carothers, Sr and Ruth Bake Carothers Conaway. He graduated from Conotton Valley High School in 1961. During and after high school, he worked for Harry Reed Milk Hauling. He next worked for Scio Pottery, the former Cleveland Contractors, Cadiz Equipment, Upland Contracting Coal Co in Smithfield and Regal Mining at Harlem Springs, where he was forced to retire in 1990 after an injury.
A member of the Hanover Methodist Church, Tom loved working on antique cars. He was also an accomplished woodworker. He loved traveling with his friends and family and will be fondly remembered as a genuine, loving man who would give you the shirt off of his back.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Shirley Minto Carothers on November 5, 1996, they married on August 11, 1962. Also preceding are a daughter Vickie Burnsworth, grandson Derrick Wood, sons-in-law Chuck DeVore and Greg Forrest, and a brother Randy Conway.
Surviving is children Lorrie DeVore, and companion Randy Ferguson, of Deersville, Tom Carothers, Jr, wife Jill, JoAnn Forrest and Theresa Harrison, husband Eric, all of Scio, grandchildren Vanessa, Heath, Wade, LeAnn, Ashley, Dakota and Ailey, and great grandchildren Haley, Kylie, Cirsten, Analeigh, Austin, Cecilia, Otto and Kason.
Services will be held Thursday, December 19, 2024, at noon in Koch Funeral Home, 101W Main St, Scio with Pastor Dixie Hendricks officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Scio. Friends may call Thursday from 11 am – noon, prior to the service.
