Obituary

Velma N. Shields Roman, age 104, of Carrollton passed away October 9, 2026 in Carroll Health Care Center. Born April 17, 1922 in New Rumley, she was a daughter of the late Robert Montgomery and Ethel CunninghamMontgomery.

After graduating from Jewett High School, she worked at the Scio Pottery before her marriage and the birth of her three children. After her husband’s death, she attended Kent State University and earned her Bachelors in Elementary Education. Velma then taught at Bowerston, Jewett, and Scio Elementary schools, mainly teaching 3rd grade. She and her second husband, whom she married in 1974, were charter members of the Kilgore Evangelical Church, where Velma served as their historian. Velma led a life of faith and devotion that blessed her family and community in countless ways, through prayers, her example, and loving hospitality. In her younger years, she was an accomplished seamstress. She loved inviting people into her home for a meal and working in her flower garden. She was an enthusiastic traveler who enjoyed camping with her family and sightseeing in many countries around the world.


Velma was preceded in death by her first husband, William “Bill” Shields; her second husband, Emerson Roman; and her sister, Eileen Thompson. Surviving children areCarolyn (David) Borlandof Carrollton; Dallen Shields of Huntington, IN; Gary (Marilyn) Shields of Carrollton and grandchildren Tully Borland of Carrollton; Tristan Borland of Madison, WI; Titus Borland of Galloway, OH; Nathan Shields of Carmel, IN; Alexa Shields of Long Island, NY; Aaron Shields of Carmel, IN; Jannai Shields of Carrollton; Javan Shields of Ames, IA; Lael Callon of Whiteland, IN; and 25 great grandchildren. 

Services will be held on Friday October 16, 2026, at 1PM at Kilgore Evangelical Church, 8114 Germano Rd. SE Amsterdam, OH 43903 with Pastor Harold Miller officiating. Burial will follow at New Rumley Cemetery. Friends may call two hours prior to service from 11AM-1PM at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kilgore Evangelical Church, 8114 Germano Rd SE, Amsterdam, Ohio 44903.
