Thomas W. “Tom” Dowdel, Jr, AKA “Spin Daddy”, age 74, died Monday, August 28, 2023, at his home near New Rumley after a lengthy illness.
Born September 6, 1948, in Wheeling, WV, he was a son of the late Thomas W. Dowdel, Sr and Dorothy Ellan Thompson Dowdel. A Jewett High School graduate, Tom started working at Boich Mine near Blooming while still a senior in high school. He also worked for Hanna Coal Co. and Consol and had been a truck driver for Cramblett Trucking. He joined the Civil Air Patrol, was a member of the Sons of the Scio American Legion Post 482, Harrison Lodge 219 F&AM, A&A Scottish Rite of Steubenville and was a licensed Ham operator. Tom never met a stranger and enjoyed life. He loved driving fast whether it was riding with his wife on his many Harley’s adventures or racing go-carts, dune buggy’s or drag racing cars. He owned many classic cars and trucks over the years and won numerous awards at area car shows. Tom also was DJ at car shows, earning him the nickname “Spin Daddy”. He was a former road manager and ran the sound system for his son and his friends former band “Outback”.
Surviving are his high school sweetheart and wife of 53 years, Sharen Tedrow Dowdel, sons Michael and Bryan (Mary) Dowdel both of Jewett area, three granddaughters, three great grandsons, a brother Terry (Jackie) Dowel and a sister Kathy Dowdel. His beloved dogs Boomer and Peachy sadly passed away this year.
The family would like to celebrate his life by inviting the classic car and motorcycle enthusiast to drive them to his service that will be held Friday, September 1, 2023, at 1 pm in Scio Methodist Church, 117 Maple St, Scio, with Pastor Mike Cuningham officiating, and to the burial following in Fairview Cemetery, Jewett. Friends may call Thursday evening from 7-9 with Masonic services being held prior, or Friday from 11am to 1 pm prior to the service all at the church. Casual dress is requested.
